Brebeufian of the Week: Pure Garcia

Reverie Pure Garcia. who would forget her? she's the black mamba of the brebeuf class in the freshmen and sophomore years. but leaving in the middle of 2nd year high was tragic yet victorious. armed with confidence and vengeance against the chalk-throwing-monster-teacher (haha) she became the reason why i had to put up with my mom as asubstitute teacher. but yeah, things happen for a reason. she transferred to another school bringing her identity as a brebeufianne and soared her way to the top.

She might have been gone in the rest of our high school years but her legacy remained. she played jasmine in our freshmen presentation. think about the hits called "ang islang taiwan.." and "20 million ang populasyon ng taiwan" ahaha. remember the "toshiro.. bene ki, porke bo ta kome lodo?" skit? that and more made her one brebeufian we could never put aside.

She was never prodigal. she has always been part of the class... away but always there. on her 29th birthday, let's honor the brebeufianne who dared... read on and see what's pure is up to these days!

Any accomplishments since high school?

Let’s see, I got accepted in UP Diliman and majored in BA Pol Sci. I played basketball for the ladies’ team at both my dorms – Kalayaan (in my freshman year) and Ilang-Ilang (for my remaining years in UP). Ya tumba pa nga yo and scraped my left leg… I became an officer in certain orgs, the most notable of which was the UP University Student Council where I served as Councilor. And then I went to law school (San Beda) and passed the 2006 Bar. And ofcors, I lost a lot of my baby fat and became the sexy Pure I am today. hehe.

What's your position at work? Tell us more about your work.

I’m an ASSOCIATE LAWYER at the De Leon & Desiderio Law Firm in Ortigas. Si cosa man kamo ta mira na tv that lawyers do, amo kel mi trabaho. But it’s not as glamorous as you think. Some court judges are really nasty and they shout at lawyers every now and then. Fortunately, I have not suffered that indignity yet. And when you’re in court, just argue away. It doesn’t matter if you’re wrong or right – the truth has many versions anyway.

Describe high school in one word.

Ateneo – Bitin. I didn’t get the chance to get to know everyone kasi.

Pilar College – Blessing. That’s because a lot of good things came my way when I transferred there. I met a lot of good people and made good friends.

How did you become good friends with Dino Dano?

Hehe. I know all of you are somewhat surprised as to why Dino and I are now good friends. As you must probably remember, back in high school, I didn’t like him very much. In fact, I didn’t like him at all! Kasi he was so makulit! Dol chene bulati!

I met Daño again when he enrolled for law review in Beda. It’s been years since I last saw him kaya nga when I noticed him from the crowd of students at Beda’s auditorium entrance, I happily approached him to say hello. We exchanged numbers and then I told him if there was anything he needed, he can text me.

We had 5 months to prepare for the bar and you can only imagine how boring it got sometimes to be studying at home the whole day. E, I live alone pa nmn in my apartment kaya I had no one to talk to except for my dog. That’s why sometimes I would call Dino to check on how far he was with his readings and to chismis lang for a while. On the week before the 3rd or 4th Sunday of the bar (I don’t exactly remember), I invited Dino to sleepover at my house so we can study together. He happily obliged. Nuay kel malisya guys! But I don’t know with Daño si chene. hehe. He occupied one sofa, and I stayed in my own corner. We stayed up until the wee hours of the morning. There were times pensaba le I was still reading pero durmido ya gale yo kel. We would buy our meals at the nearby carinderia, and so far he liked the food there. He was supposed to stay for a nyt lang, but I think he liked my place very much and if I may add he liked the host even more (hahahaha!) that he decided to stay for another day. That’s how our friendship started.

Most memorable moment?

Our first ever presentation during the freshman orientation where our class sang “A Whole New World.” Edmar was Alladin, si Gafar el genie, and I was Princess Jasmine.

Most embarassing moment?

Akel when my bra or back got exposed on stage while playing Sister Luisa in a play. Si Ivan Gorda was my leading man, and he played the part of Ramon. Bien crush pa gat kel kunele si Pamela that time.hehe. Anyway, si Filipino Estacio if you remember was Mother Superior, and when he pulled my dress, the buttons popped open.

Sinong favorite person mo sa high school? Crush? Teacher?

Edmar cguro because we were friends since grade school and we attended a lot of out-of-school activities together.

Crush? Does this have to be our classmate? Kasi nuay e. I was still getting over my gradeskul crush with Earl. Hehe.

For fave teacher, Ms. Hong. U never forget your first moderator in high school diba? But I would like to add Sir Mike Lopez who was our adviser in COL. He was a very nice guy. Kabar gwapo pa. hehe And also Mr. Ramos because I enjoyed our practical arts classes very much.

Is there something you want to change sa high school experience?

Yes. I would not have allowed Randy Jay to sing my “Ang Islang Taiwan ay nasa hilaga ng, hilaga ng bansang Pilipinas…” composition, because to this day he sings it to me each time we meet and it drives me crazy. Hehehe = )

What can you say about the reunion last 2007?

I had so much fun. Ya perde yo P50 (or was it P100?) na poker, but it was all worth it. It was wonderful being in the company of old friends and classmates. Thank you gale for inviting me.

Describe your first date.

Di mio first date was horrible kay nukere yo kun di mio date. Ya porsa lang kasi kel disu ate kumigo to date him. E she was my friend that’s why I agrid.

What's the name of your boyfriend/fiance?

His name is Albert D. Sapaen, Jr. Friends and family call him Dong. He is currently an Area Sales Manager of UPS (United Parcel Service), an American company providing international courier services.

So, how's your relationship with him?

It’s good. We’re wacky and happy. Lukuras lang pirmi. Poreso impure ya yo ara. Pero not so much. Umpoko lang. Hehehe. We love to eat kahit saan and watch movies as do most couples. On a more serious note though, Dong is someone I can to talk to about anything. He understands me and has stood by me through the good and the bad, the beautiful and the ugly.

When is the big day?

It will be on September 19 this year.

If you were stuck in an island, with only one item to bring, what will it be?

Probably my rosary because it will be the only thing that will make me feel safe there.

Still stuck on the island, which classmate would you like to be stuck with?

Randy Jay cguro so that we can happily sing my famous song together while waiting for help, and hopefully be able to compose a new one about the island we’re stuck in. Pwede tamen kun Ivan because he seems like such a gentleman, and he will probably look for food and firewood and all that stuff. Besides, according to my sister Gizanne, Kuya Ivan was very nice to them during her ACIL days in Ateneo. Numas kun Daño kay chene kel hidden desire kumigo. He myt gahasa me while we’re there. hahahaha! Pero c nuay classmate, pwede kun Sir Ramos ya lang baka pwede pa le man build raft and we can both sail home together.

A genie in a bottle grants you 3 wishes, what would they be?

1. Travel back in time.

2. To have Oprah’s fame, fortune and influence.

3. To have a Transformer for a car.

So how do you see yourself 10 years from now?

Sana, I would have my own law firm na by then. Tas at least 2 kids and a happy marriage. And also have my own non-profit organization that’s geared towards helping the poor and making Zamboanga a safer and more prosperous place to live in.
